Before He Cheats is the worst song on the planet. It's so bad, it deserves it's own topic. I know all the drunk chicks are in love with it but now every time I hear anyone talk about Louisville, it just starts playing over and over and over in my head.

This goes beyond getting stuck though. It's raunchy, poppy, bubblegum country like this that wrongly empowers highly intoxicated women, giving them the incredibly horrible idea of roughing up their ex's car and other various possessions. Even when he's *not* a good-fer-nothing cheating ass!

And what's even WORSE THAN THAT is getting it so jammed in my head from all the repeat plays that when *I* get drunk, I start humming it in the men's bathroom. WTF.

Yeah, I totally agree! The bar I used to work at had lots of silly drunk redneck chicks all the time. I swear there were nights I would have to hear that damn son five or six times. They also were in love with playing Crazy Bitch over and over. For whatever reason, they all thought it was good to relate themselves to both of the songs. Idiots!

    Tunes That Trigger Tears

I'm thinking the theme of these posts is something like "Pet peeves in music." I hope that's it, because I've got a few.

    SONGS THAT BRING A LUMP.
These aren't necessarily BAD songs, but songs that make my throat feel like it's about to blow up, which is always a prelude to a crying jag for me. I'm not saying pain shouldn't be expressed in all forms of art, including music. But some songs just take it to the edge. Some Sad Songs that Say So Much include:

"Don't Cry Daddy" - Elvis Presley. This one's just so sad it's almost cruel. Atleast the title lets the listener know he's in for a downer.
TEAR JERKING LINE: "Daddy, you've still got me, Little Tommy/Together we'll find a brand-new mommy..." I mean REALLY!

"Shannon" - Henry Gross. Stories about losing a beloved pet shake me up every bit as much as those
about humans (more, to be honest) and this one just takes it too far.
TEAR JERKING LINE: "Finally the tears fill our eyes, and I know that somewhere tonight, she knows how much we really miss her." *sob*

"Cat's in the Cradle" - Harry Chapin. The always-relevant account of an absentee father who regrets missing out on seeing his son grow up. It's a running joke around here how that song gets to me. When my 12-year-old son wants me to do something with him and I say no, he starts going, "...And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon..." By the time he gets to the second verse, I'm grabbing my keys and grumbling, "I'm going, I'm going already!"
TEAR JERKING LINE: "He said, 'my new job's a hassle and the kids have the flu, but it's sure nice talkin' to you, Dad, it's been sure nice talking to you. And as I hung up the phone it occured to me, he'd grown up just like me. My boy was just like me." Oh MAN!

"Seasons in the Sun" - Terry Jacks. This cheery little number is in first-person by a guy apparently in his last days. He goes around to his loved ones to say goodbye to them, and the result is gut-wrenching.
TEAR JERKING LINE: "Goodbye Michelle it's hard to die when all the birds are singing in the sky. Now that the spring is in the air and the flowers everywhere...When you see them, I'll be there."

"Last Kiss" - J. Frank Wilson or Pearl Jam. Almost everyone can sing along to this saga of a young man's fiance' being accidentally shot by her father. In one verse, the singer asks "oh where oh where can my baby be?" Then he answers himelf two lines later with, "She's gone to Heaven so I've got to be good..." He is as confused as he is heartbroken, which only adds to the sadness.
TEAR JERKING LINE: "I held her close, I kissed her our last kiss, I felt the love that I knew I would miss. And now she's gone even though I held her tight, I lost my love, my life, that night."

"He Stopped Loving Her Today" - George Jones. Who wouldn't get a chill when they realize that the man has only given up on the girl because he dropped dead?
TEAR JEARKING LINE: I went to see my friend today, but I didn't see no tears. He was all dressed up to go away, first time I'd seen him smile in years."

Okay, those are the ones that popped into my head, how about you guys? What song or songs tug at your heartstrings?
Wow, I was in fine spirits when I began this post. But after remembering all these misery-inspired lyrics, I think I'd better just make myself a cosmopolitan and (drink myself silly)chill... *sob*

    <w!>

P.S. You know, speaking of tragic songs (yes, I AM still on that morbid topic) there's one that was popular when I was in -- well, let's just say "in the 1970's" that also belongs on this list, but I can't think of the name of it. I ran into an old schoolchum of mine and we were talking about the music we liked in grade school, the 70's stuff, and neither one of us could recall the name or singer of this one. I'm hoping someone here will recognize it.
It was about a relationship (big shock, that) between a young married couple and it talked about their lives, how deliriously happy they were when they bought a house then had a baby... and then one of them dies and leaves the other with their little girl... anyone have any ideas? It wasn't the feel-good song of the year, but I think it was pretty popular. It's probably really corny, but it's just killing me that I can't think of it. That's all I can remember about it... anyone?

Any more info on the song? Country, Pop, Blues? Male or female artist?

It was definitely pop. It was a male singer, I'm guessing in his 20's or so. It wasn't fast, but wasn't morbidly slow, either. I know the song mentions a birthday party they threw for their little girl when she turned one. And unless (those brain cells really don't grow back) I'm way off, there was something about sipping wine, also. (Nothing like a love song that talks about wino parents, huh?) I'm thinking maybe it was the girl, the wife I mean, that died, since it's the guy singing it. (And if a guy was like, singing about when HE died, it would be, well, just plain stupid.) With all the oldie stations around now, you'd think I'd've heard it again since then, but I don't think so. But God did they play it a lot back in the day! I'm guessing after 1974 and before, say, '78... but that's just a guess. My friend said she cried when she first heard it, which I thought was a little much. But it WAS a tearjerker.
I'm usually pretty good at remembering songs, but this one's just out of my reach, which of course is making me crazy...

Topping the list of songs that make me cry:

The George Jones/B.B. King version of Patches.

And that's it for me on George Jones. He stopped loving her today makes me want to kick some one. My ex was in a country cover band and having to hear that song a couple times a night every Friday and Saturday...

Knowing the inspiration for the song makes it even more sad:

Wayne Cochran was initially inspired to write the song after having lived near a dangerous highway where several accidents had occurred yearly. Cochran began writing the song in 1956. He came up with the song's chord progression, first verse, and chorus, although five years would pass before Cochran finished the song.

    Lyrical inspiration

Cochran based the rest of the song on an incident in which several teens were killed and two seriously injured when their car struck a flatbed logging truck. Sixteen-year-old Jeanette Clark was out on a date in Barnesville, Georgia on December 22, 1962, the Saturday before Christmas. She was with a group of friends in a 1954 Chevrolet. J. L. Hancock, also sixteen, was driving the car in heavy traffic and while traveling on Highway 341, collided with a trailer truck. Clark, Hancock, and another teenager were killed, and two other teens in the car were seriously injured. Cochran finished the song, which he titled "Last Kiss", and dedicated it to Clark.

Autumn Leaves, the version Eva Cassidy sang live at Blues Alley... that's the only song I can remember causing tear jerking for me. It's kind of haunting:

    My God, that's it!
I've been trying to figure that out for so long... and you know, the very night I was asking about that I had a conversation with my 12-year-old son about the Rocky (no relation to the song) movies. He'd never seen them, and I was going, "You've never seen Rocky? Seriously?" Man, I was right there... right house number, wrong street, huh?
Thanks so much for that, really. I don't really know how you got it from what I gave you, but you did and I'm grateful.

So yesterday I was making some muffins, and all of a sudden, I thought "this shi** is bananas, b-a-n-a-n-a-s!"

Damn you Gwen Stefani! I would be more annoyed if I still had Hollaback Girl stuck in my head if I hadn't heard about No Doubt getting back together. Her whole solo career was really irritating!
